Statement of the President of the Company on implementation of the initiatives in climate action projects, sustainable development and safety of the employees

07.12.2021

HSE policies in the Company's operations are the main priorities and the most important conditions for successful and sustainable development of PJSC “RussNeft” in the framework of addressing emerging environmental, social and management issues.

The energy sector in which our Company operates is considered to be one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, we are closely following the climate agenda and development of “green” technologies in production and processing of hydrocarbons.

PJSC “RussNeft” recognizes the importance of measures to prevent global climate change and supports Russia's efforts to implement provisions of Paris Agreement. We take active part in updating sectoral legislation, developing a national system of instruments that formalize the objectives of carbon neutrality as well as in contributing to cutting СО₂ emissions on a global scale.

Our actions to protect the environment are not limited to legislative activities. PJSC “RussNeft” is developing its own strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is implementing a number of measures to manage climate risks. The Company has "Investment Gas Program of APG Efficient Use Improvement", "Program of Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency Improvement" and "Action plan for Reforestation". A promising area is introduction of technologies for capturing and storing СО₂.

The implementation of these programs will reduce the level of APG flaring, increase the efficiency of its own thermal power generation, increase the energy efficiency of equipment used in the production, treatment and transportation of oil and gas. Together, these steps will lead to reducing the negative impact on the environment and reduce the carbon footprint.

In order to implement the strategy to reduce the carbon impact on the environment, the Company's management sets appropriate goals and objectives, allocates the necessary organizational and financial resources to achieve them, controls and analyzes the Company's activities in the field of sustainable development.

Key programs for reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

The Company's activities in cutting greenhouse gas emissions are based on existing experience in implementation of low-carbon projects aligning with the practice of the peers.

PJSC “RussNeft” climate strategy aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. We are planning to reduce controlled emissions by 10% compared to 2019 levels. This is equivalent to a 140,000 tons cut in gross greenhouse gas emissions to the extent analogous thereto.

Efficient use of APG

The Company uses APG to generate heat and electricity for its own consumption. In addition, we send APG to gas processing plants and supply it to the gas transmission systems of other organizations. The level of APG utilization in the Company is more than 95%. This work continues at the new fields and is outlined in the Investment Gas Program to improve the efficient use of APG. The activities of the program will allow the highest level of efficiency in compliance with the technology.

Improving Energy Efficiency

Improving energy efficiency is one of the strategic directions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Works in this area are determined in “Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency Improvement Program”. It is focused on improving energy efficiency and cutting energy waste resulting from planned annual activities, as well as on the upgrade of equipment for oil and gas recovery and treatment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Reforestation activities

The implementation of major reforestation projects helps the Company to compensate for the emissions. The "Reforestation Action Plan" for the period from 2020 to 2024 involves planting of 2 million trees. From 2024, they will absorb 493 tons of СО₂ annually.

New solutions

As part of compensatory measures and activities for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, PJSC “RussNeft” is looking for optimal technological solutions for capturing СО₂ and injecting it into the reservoir.

Sustainability and protection of employees

2021 confirmed the critical importance of joining forces to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. PJSC “RussNeft” comprehensive program to combat COVID-19 is aimed at protecting employees, ensuring the continuity of production operations and maintaining financial stability of the Company.

From the start of the pandemic and to the present moment, PJSC “RussNeft” has been doing everything possible to preserve the health and life of its employees, their families, local population, customers and partners. The Company's priorities here are:

  • formation of a safe environment at the facilities with the help of regular mandatory testing;
  • creation of observation sites where shift workers are quarantined before entering the field;
  • transfer of a part of employees to a remote working mode;
  • interaction with municipalities in the places of production in order to vaccinate the Company's employees and contractors.
  • PJSC “RussNeft” continues to support the indigenous peoples of the Far North, interact with municipalities on the issues of equipping medical institutions and assistance to vulnerable groups of the population, participate in joint educational projects, maintain a commitment to a healthy lifestyle and sports.

The Company's success is measured not only by KPI’s, but also by the benefits created for society in general terms. We always strive for more - and will continue to make a significant contribution to the environmental protection and the development of society.
